Two different approaches
Preventive maintenance schedules inspection, servicing or replacement at a defined interval such as operating hours or months. Predictive maintenance uses observed equipment condition to support decisions about when intervention is needed. Both approaches aim to prevent unplanned failure, but they rely on different information.
Where preventive maintenance works well
Time- or usage-based maintenance is a sound choice for legally required inspections, lubrication tasks with established intervals, and consumables whose degradation patterns are predictable. A calendar task is not automatically effective: inspect work histories to ensure the intervention actually addresses a credible failure mode.
When condition monitoring adds value
High-consequence rotating assets may justify vibration analysis, oil analysis, temperature trending or other measurements. For example, a developing bearing fault may produce a vibration trend before the machine becomes noisy. An isolated reading should be validated against operating conditions, baseline history and measurement quality rather than treated as a diagnosis by itself.
Choose based on risk and evidence
Start by listing the asset function, credible failure modes, consequences and available detection methods. Choose preventive work when a known interval provides effective control. Choose condition-based monitoring when there is a detectable degradation period and enough time to intervene. Some failures require design changes, protective systems or run-to-failure policies rather than frequent inspections.
Measure outcomes
Track repeat faults, emergency work, planned-work completion, condition alerts acted upon and the quality of maintenance findings. Review tasks that repeatedly find nothing, but never remove safety-critical controls without formal risk assessment. The goal is more reliable operation, not simply a higher number of inspection tasks.
